Eliminate White Noise in Audacity: A Step-by-Step Guide

May 17, 2024

If you're trying to record crystal-clear audio using Audacity, white noise can be a major annoyance. Fortunately, this open-source software offers some effective ways to minimize or completely remove white noise from your recordings.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to stop white noise recording on Audacity:

  1. Import your audio file: Open Audacity, go to 'File' then 'Open,' and select the file you want to edit.

  2. Identify the white noise: Listen to your recording to locate a section where only white noise can be heard, without any important audio.

  3. Select the noise profile: In the white noise section, click and drag to highlight the noise. Then, go to 'Effect', followed by 'Noise Reduction,' and click on 'Get Noise Profile.'

  1. Apply noise reduction: Next, press Ctrl+A to select the entire audio track. Go back to 'Effect,' click on 'Noise Reduction,' and adjust the 'Noise Reduction (dB),' 'Sensitivity,' and 'Frequency Smoothing (bands)' settings to your preference. Click 'Preview' to hear the adjustments before applying. Once satisfied, click 'OK.'

  2. Finishing touches: You may need to further tweak the volume of your recording or clean up any remaining white noise manually. Use the 'Amplify' effect to adjust volume and the 'Time Shift' tool to align audio tracks.

  3. Export your final audio: Once you're happy with the results, go to 'File,' then 'Export', and save the recording in your desired file format.

By following these steps, you will significantly minimize or eliminate any white noise in your Audacity recordings, ensuring a cleaner and more professional sound.
