Generating Pink Noise in Reaper: A Step-by-Step Guide

May 17, 2024

Pink noise, also known as 1/f noise, is a frequency spectrum characterized by a flat amplitude across the audible range, which makes it ideal for audio testing purposes and mixing music. If you are using Reaper as your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), generating pink noise can be done in a matter of minutes. In this article, we will guide you through the necessary steps required to generate pink noise in Reaper, from installing the required plugins to tweaking and exporting the final audio file.

  1. Install the Required Plugin

To generate pink noise in Reaper, you will need a plugin capable of generating this specific waveform. One such plugin is 'ReaJS', which is included in the official Reaper package called ReaPlugs. To install ReaJS, follow these steps:

  • Download the ReaPlugs installer from the official Reaper website (https://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs)

  • Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions, making sure to install the VST plugins to your preferred location

  • Launch Reaper and go to 'Options' > 'Preferences' > 'Plug-ins' > 'VST'

  • Add the path to the installed ReaPlugs folder in the 'VST plug-in paths' and click 'Rescan'

  1. Add ReaJS to a Track

Now that you have the ReaJS plugin installed follow these steps:

  • Create a new track in Reaper by right-clicking in the Track Control Panel or pressing 'Control + T'

  • Click the 'FX' button in the newly created track to open the 'Add FX' window

  • Type 'ReaJS' into the search bar and select it from the list

  • Click 'OK' to add the plugin to the track

  1. Configure ReaJS to Generate Pink Noise

With ReaJS added to the track, follow these steps to configure it:

  • In the ReaJS FX window, click 'Load preset or script from file' (top-right corner)

  • Locate the folder where ReaPlugs were installed and open the 'Scripts' folder

  • Find the script named 'Pink_noise_generator' and click 'Open'

  • Adjust the 'Level' parameter to set the amplitude of the pink noise between -30db to -100db, or set it to your desired level

  1. Export Pink Noise

Now that ReaJS is generating pink noise on the track, it's time to export the audio file:

  • Go to 'File' > 'Render'

  • Choose the output directory, file format, and other settings as desired
