Tuning Your Room with the Behringer X32 Pink Noise Generator

Jan 30, 2024

The Behringer X32 digital mixer offers an onboard pink noise generator to help you tune your room and sound system for optimum audio quality. Understanding how to use this feature can greatly improve the overall sound quality of your live performances, studio recordings or podcasts. In this article, we'll walk you through the process of tuning your room using the Behringer X32 pink noise generator step-by-step.

What is Pink Noise?

Pink noise is a type of noise that has equal energy per octave, making it a useful tool for audio calibration and tuning. It provides a consistent and broad spectrum of frequencies that can help you identify and correct problems in your room's acoustics or your sound system's performance.

Step-by-Step Guide to Tune Your Room with the Behringer X32 Pink Noise Generator:

  1. Begin by connecting your Behringer X32 mixer to your sound system, ensuring all speakers and monitors are powered on and connected properly.

  2. On the X32's main screen, press the 'Routing' button to access the routing menu.

  3. Navigate to the 'Oscillator' tab by using the 'Page' buttons.

  1. Ensure the 'Oscillator Type' is set to 'Pink Noise' and adjust the 'Oscillator Level' to a reasonable volume (around -20 dB should be sufficient).

  2. In the Routing menu, select the output channels you wish to send the pink noise to, such as your main speakers or monitors. Typically, you would want to send it to the same output channels you use for your live or studio mix.

  3. Activate the pink noise generator by pressing the 'On' button in the Oscillator tab. You should now hear the pink noise coming through your sound system.

  1. Listen carefully to the pink noise and pay attention to any specific frequencies or areas in the room that may exhibit harshness, resonance, or uneven frequency response.

  2. Use a Real Time Analyzer (RTA) to visually analyze the room's frequency response and further pinpoint problematic areas. Many mobile apps are available for this task, and can often be connected wirelessly to the X32.

  3. Adjust your room's acoustics, reposition speakers, or use your X32's onboard EQ features to correct any inconsistencies found in your room's sound. You may also benefit from using external tools such as room correction plugins, third-party EQs or hardware processors.

  1. Once you are satisfied with the balance of frequencies and your room's overall sound, deactivate the pink noise generator by pressing the 'On' button once more in the Oscillator tab. Your room is now tuned, and you can proceed to mix your audio as usual.

By utilizing the Behringer X32's onboard pink noise generator to tune your room, you can achieve a more balanced and accurate sound, improving the overall quality of your productions and performances.
