Why White Noise Haunts Your AirPods: Reasons and Solutions

Jan 23, 2024

If you're an AirPods user, you may have experienced a faint sound of white noise in the background while using them. This can be quite irritating, especially when you're trying to enjoy a crisp, clear audio experience. There are several reasons why your AirPods might be emitting white noise and, fortunately, there are solutions available.

One reason for white noise in your AirPods could be the ambient noise cancellation feature that gets activated when the AirPods are inserted in your ears. This feature works to block out the noise of your environment, but it can sometimes produce white noise as a result. Here are a few ways to possibly fix this issue:

  1. Disable noise cancellation: You can disable the noise cancellation feature from your iPhone settings. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Toggle off 'Noise Cancellation.'

  2. Reset your AirPods: Sometimes, resetting your AirPods can resolve the issue. To do this, place them in the charging case, close the lid, and wait for 30 seconds. Then, open the lid, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the LED light flashes amber, and then white.

  3. Check for damages: Inspect your AirPods for any physical damage or debris, as either could cause white noise. If you suspect damage, reach out to Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for assistance.

  4. Update AirPods firmware: Make sure your AirPods are up to date with the latest firmware. To check, go to Settings > General > About > AirPods and look for the Firmware Version. If an update is available, connect your AirPods to a charging case, and place them near your iPhone to update automatically.

  5. Contact Apple Support: If you've tried the above methods and the white noise persists, it might be time to get in touch with Apple Support for further troubleshooting and potential replacement.

Although white noise in your AirPods can be annoying, there are several ways to address and resolve the issue. With some troubleshooting and diligence, you should be able to return to enjoying your AirPods' audio quality without interruption.
